Near-surface circulation in the Pomeranian Bay

Abstract - - The circulation in front of Usedom has been measured by HF-radar, which is a remote sensing technique using electromagnetic waves in the decameter range. By setting up three radar sites at Ahlbeck, Koserow and Karlshagen, a strip of up to 35 km off the coast of Usedom has been observed twice per hour. Data were collected during the four seasons within the German project TRUMP (Transport und Umsatz in der Pommerschen Bucht). Special conditions for operation of HF radar systems in that area have been identified, which include the influence of salinity and wave height. Structures of the current field during typical wind situations and outflow from the Swina are shown. Finally, some information is given on an advanced HF-radar system called WERA (Wellen Radar), which has recently been developed at the University of Hamburg.
